Hugh van Cuylenburg was a primary school teacher volunteering in northern India when he had a life-changing realisation: despite the underprivileged community the children were from, they were remarkably positive. By contrast, back in Australia Hugh knew that all too many people found it hard to be happy, or suffered from mental illnesses such as depression and anxiety. His own little sister had been ravaged by anorexia nervosa. GEM Conversation Cards
A pack of 48 cards with instructions for use on the box. Each card has an image of one of the GEM superheroes on one side, and a question or conversation starter on the other side relating to GEM (Gratitude, Empathy, Mindfulness and Emotional Literacy). The cards can be used in a variety of settings like at the dinner table or in the car on a family holiday to spark conversations around GEM and give ideas to practise GEM on the spot and in daily life to promote and strengthen positive mental health and wellbeing. GEM Heroes Activity Book
This activity book is aimed at children aged 6-13ish. It has 25 fun and engaging activities to help you to practice Gratitude, Empathy, Mindfulness and Emotional Literacy (5 activities for each principle) along with definitions and ideas of how to practice them throughout the day. Activities include writing gratitude letters, mazes and spot the difference, to thinking about acts of kindness and breathing exercises. The purpose is to introduce kids to GEM to make them feel happier and give them some useful strategies for self-care.
